The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games trilogy is set in the near future, in a post-apocalyptic nation known as Panem. Panem is ruled by an authoritarian government. The government is headquartered in the nation’s very wealthy capital known as the Capitol, which is being served by 12 impoverished areas known as the Districts. Now, there were previously 13 Districts serving the totalitarian government and the city of Capitol. But District 13 rebelled and failed to overthrow the government. The government destoyed District 13 as a punishment.
Furthermore, as a reminder for the 12 remaining Districts of the consequences of rebellion, the government instituted a brutal annual tradition to be known as the Hunger Games. Under this tradition, kids 10 to 18 years old would be randomly selected from each district and brought to the Capitol to compete as modern Gladiators, battling each other to death until only one remains alive. This will be televised nationwide to be cheered on by the whole nation. The lone survivor would be crowned the victor and would be awarded with fame and wealth. The books revolve around the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, one of the 12 participants in the Hunger Games, the time the story happened.
